open 00658 Hong Kong 2007/00706 HK Day 09
Day 9. Flake out 2. Spend the day just walking the city. It's a damn big city. And there is a lot of it.

Day 7. Exhaustion sets in. It's culture day. It was a cold and dreary day and we were damn tired. So it was a gallery day. And it was a Wednesday. (All the galleries are free on Wednesday).

Day 6. The Giant Buddha. We went to Ngong Ping village to see the giant Buddha. To get to the once isolated village you take one of the worlds largest cable cars up to specially made tourist trap village. There is a Starbucks. After the short skim cappuccino you can proceed to the Buddha and climb the 240 odd steps to enlightenment. No guarantee of enlightenment but you can get your photo taken with the Buddha.

Day 5. Cruising Central, New Years Day. Most of the smaller shops were shut down for the day. But it was a good chance to go for a first walk around the central district of Hong Kong island. Oh and if your looking for cooking supplies, then Pantry Magic in the Pedder Building is awesome.

Day 4, Disneyland New Years eve. The main reason for our trip. Stop two on the "Get to ever Disneyland on the planet" tour. I'm happy to say they HK Disney doesn't disappoint. But it is damn small.
open 00658 Hong Kong 2007/00700 HK Day 02
Day 2 the free tour. For an unknown reason we got a free tour around Hong Kong. Well it was free because the tour company gets a commission on bringing tourists through local businesses. But it was a great way of covering a lot of ground without any effort.
open 00658 Hong Kong 2007/00659 HK Day 01
Day 1, getting the lay of the land. Did nothing but walk around. I did learn that Nathan Road is full of Indian guys who want to make me a suit, sell me a copy watch or bag. If you spend a lot of time in Hong Kong this becomes a massive test to see how you can avoid them.

The last one was getting a little bloated. As is most of this site. So it's time for a new folder. And yes the spelling mistake is meant to be there again. If it's broken, but it works, does it need fixing?

In September of 2005 my partner and I went to Japan. The plan went like this. I wanted to visit an old friend in Kyoto. We both wanted to do a lot of shopping. And as fate would have it I had to speak at the Tokyo Game Show. It was an insane. It was fantastic. And it was over too soon. This is that story.

open 00654 EKKA 2005
I have a secret passion for crowds. I went to the EKKA, I took my camera and I shot the crowd. I did it as practice for my trip to Japan. I thought I would dust off my shooting finger and never look at the shots again. I got some really nice stuff. And the crowd just kept on going
open 00653 Empty Spaces
This is what happens when a people photographer gets sick of people. Once again this is not the best method of viewing the work. They are very large. Usually about 1.2 meters at the shortest side. This is because I don't have the cash to use the 3 meter wide printer in Melbourne. But one day. This is still a work in progress. I'll keep posting to it as I start to get it right.
open 00652 Giant Heads
There's something special about a picture of a Giant Head. The Big Head project (formerly known as Neutral Face) started in 2002 and is still going. It stated as a simple experiment but grew into a small obsession with people's faces and looking at them in a new way. The internet isn't the best delivery system for this work as the average size of an image is about a meter on the shortest side. At that scale it's about as intimate as you can get. Everything about it is up close and personal. The process is to photograph extreme close-ups of the face. Often filling the frame with only a few centimetres of skin. Take all those shots and when they combine it gives a portrait that can take up to fifteen minutes to shoot. And the camera has to be within 10 centimetres of the sitter. And it's a big camera.
open 00651 EA Imagine
I found out on the 1st of September that I had to got to Sydney on the 2nd of September, to talk to the media at this event called EA Imagine. Electronic Arts invite all these people to come and have a look at their games and write nice (hopefully) things about those games. I had to go down with John Passfield to show off TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2. This is that story.

open 00601 Hello from your past
In the summer (southern hemisphere) of 1992/1993, My family and I went to Europe. I was fifteen and just starting to get into photography. In a couple of years our family would be broken up and everybody would go their separate ways. When the trip was over I had to get busy getting back to school. Nobody relished spending the money on processing fifteen rolls of film that some fifteen year old kid shot (and mostly didn't know what he was doing) So those memories remained in my draw for 11 and a half years. But the kid grew up and paid to get his memories out of those canisters. My memories aren't what they should be so the chronology of events has been an issue. So I decided to order it all by process tag. (When you go to a lab they put a marker number tag on your film. Mostly they take it off but I got them to keep it on). Those numbers order the work. I don't have a lot of memories/mementos/photos of my childhood so this work means a lot to me. And don't worry if you don't really get anything out of this. As the talking cat said to the critic "It's not really for you" Matt

16/05/04 I'm confused well we packed up and left LA. and then we had 13 extra hours of sunlight. The flight seemed to take forever and my back was killing me. We had the best intentons of hitting the cinema when we got to the hotel. But we had a rather major flakeout and just went to bed. Somewhere along the line I've missed a day. I think it's tuesday now. But I have no idea.
open 00500 E3 2004/00208 E3 2004 day 8 The day after E3
15/05/04 E3 was yesterday I actually got to sleep in. That feels so much better. That charger did really get delivered. A guy called Robert picked it up and that wasn't me. Now begins the long process of trying to get it back. Anyway we went shopping. Went to Fry's and was impressed and then we went to Best Buy and was very impressed. Generally didn't do a lot. But I did enjoy spending money. Spoke to Kylie, it was good to know I'll be home soon. BK and John went home and then Steve and I just hung around and did nothing. It felt great. Tomorrow I'll visit the comic store and then we're on the plane.
open 00500 E3 2004/00207 E3 2004 day 7 E3 day three
14/05/04 E3 day three Well the day got off to a crap start when we turned up to find the PS2 dead and the DVD melted onto the spindel. Ripping apart a $1000 PS2 test station was pretty fun. It got up and running and was going fine until my pass got confiscated at Kentia hall because it had a white sticker on it. Thankfully Rob was psychic and turned up at the right time so I could get the whole thing sorted out. And then the batery charger that I got sent on overnight delivery from New York didn't show up. Did manage to get around and see some stuff. And the only game I actually got to play "God of War" was great. Had some fun with the booth babes and then went back to the hotel, had dinner and passed out.
open 00500 E3 2004/00206 E3 2004 day 6 E3 day two
13/05/04 E3 day two Early start, get in and then don't stop. Traveled a million miles to the other side of the world to stand within 5 feet of the game we made at home. Had a scary run in with a furry fan who kept checking out TY. Everybody loves a mascot. After the event Rob and Rob go and see King Arthur with Jerry, There was first names all around and everyone was stoked. I convince Steve that he has to go to the Sony party. His name is on the ticket and there is no chance that Eric will believe that I am Greek. I have the night alone massaging my very tired throat with scotch. I still can't get to bed early, but we are over half way.
